Phish in Portsmouth: Setlist & Recap

Phish Summer Tour continued tonight at the cozy nTelos Pavilion in Portsmouth, VA for the fourth stop of the first leg, where the band showed they are still willing to take requests. The quartet took the stage around 8 PM and immediately launched into Tube to placate “Casey” who had one hell of a Tube sign. After the first Kill Devil Falls of ’10 that wasn’t performed for a late night TV audience, Phish treated fans to the earliest placement of Slave to the Traffic Light in 15 years.

The first set also included a cover bust out in the form of Tom Waits’ Cold Water. Guitarist Trey Anastasio handled vocals for the tune off 1999’s Mule Variations. Phish hasn’t covered Tom Waits in the past, though Trey did perform House Where Nobody Lives from the same album with David Byrne for the Tibet House benefit at Carnegie Hall in 2000.

This show marked the Phish debut of Cold Water and the debut of Idea.

Set Two started off with Wilson followed by a pair of Round Room tunes – Seven Below and 46 Days. While Seven Below was kept short, 46 Days went off on a few different tangents. Idea, a new composition by bassist Mike Gordon, marked the first original debut that was completely new to the fanbase. A funky number accentuated by Page McConnell’s clav work, Idea has that signature Mike Gordon sound and quirky lyrics.

The rest of the second set featured fan favorites Also Sprach Zarathrustra (2001), Simple and Theme From The Bottom as well as a tender Joy, a butchered Taste and a near-perfect cover of The Beatles’ A Day In The Day. A double encore consisting of two TAB Trio tunes – Heavy Things and First Tube – closed things out at the sold-out venue. Phish returns to the Northeast on Thursday for the next show of the tour at the Comcast Theatre in Hartford.

  1. I think playing with the placement of songs is an easy way to change things up. Nice work, Trey.

  2. Look at AC/DC Bag, It was played twelve times last year and only four as non set openers. A little shifting is never a bad thing.

  3. “Cold Water” was more the Railroad Earth Version -vs- The Original Tom Waits Version.
‘Idea” A tasty new song from Mike… Wouldn’t mind hearing it again on this tour.

Phish conjure up the dark gods and deliver the Devil to VA. Lets just say if we were still in Hershey this show would easily be placed on the Dark Chocolate Rack at your local Kwik -E- Mart.

In case anyone missed the theme, Phish stamp it down in the way of a Heavy Things > First Tube encore…

Be on the lookout for a missing Tweezer Reprise… Lost for two shows… If anyone has any info on its location, please return it to the nearest encore ASAP…

  4. For all of those still seeking the “missing” Tweeprize from Hershey…let’s look back in Phistory and realize that there have been plenty of shows where Tweezer was played and Tweeprize was not. Some times they feel it and others maybe not, that’s just they way it goes…

  5. Just an FYI – I follow treys manager on twitter and after the show, Trey’s van hit….yup, you guessed it, POSSUM. Im expecting this to be the first repear of the tour as the opener on thursday.

  6. 2001 was clearly a shout-out to nearby-hampton. We all passed the Mothership on the way to Portsmouth.

  7. Sounded like flubs a plenty of my ears. They couldn’t connect on the section that bridges the jam and the end of the tune.
