We’ve just passed the four year anniversary of Trey Anastasio’s infamous letter to the fans declaring Phish was done, but according to a post on Rolling Stone’s blog this morning the band may be back together by the time we reach the fifth anniversary. The magazine’s Brian Hiatt spoke to Big Red last Wednesday and the guitarist dropped some “heavy hints” that the band is getting back together:
“When Phish broke up, I made some comment about how I’m not gonna go around playing ‘You Enjoy Myself’ for the rest of my life,” Anastasio said with a laugh. “And it’s so funny because Fish and Mike and Page have been talking to each other a lot lately and now — it’s not that I can’t believe that I said that, but its symbolic of how much I lost my mind or how much I lost my bearings or something. Because at this point in time I would give my left nut to play that song five times in a row every day until I die. I certainly thought about that while I was in jail.”
Well, we’d give our right nut to hear him play Y.E.M. over and over again, so that works out. But seriously after that love fest at the Jammys everyone in that room knew those guys would play together again. You just can’t end an incredible career on a low note such as Coventry. Anastasio caused a lot of bad feelings among his fans when he wrote that letter and then self-destructed at Coventry and Whitehall. It will be interesting to see what a clean and sober Trey has to say about those fateful events, and if the band can regain the spark that was clearly missing towards the end.

the day after coventry i cut my hair, and within two years i had graduated college and gotten a full time job. looks like i may have to rip up my degree, grow my hair out, and relearn how to make some grilled cheese.
i’d stop everything i was doing and get tickets to their first couple shows…no doubt

Looking back at my reaction of Coventry, it was clear to me that I didn’t want them to “shit sandwich” all over the legacy of the band. If they’re into it…and Trey really is…I honestly think they could change the world again.
I would go to see them a couple times but, it really comes down to what new music they come out with. Who wants to see mexican cousin every night?
With Jimmy Herring opening new space/time portals with Widespread Panic these days I have to say I’d never pay to see composed or repetitive Phish jams ever again. I wouldn’t mind checking them out if they did some free shows but if this is a money grab I doubt we’ll see anything like that. I just hope for all you guppies out there still hooked that they practice.

Anyway, I’d go see them plenty! And I do hope they come back reinvigorated and make some hard rock albums, and get away from all the poppy, ballady, latin-tinged tedium!
Google has seen a massive spike in searches for “bunk molly recipe” over the past 10 hours.
The only Post-Farmhouse song i’ve dug is ‘Round Room.’ Mostly because I like Mike’s songs (including Mike’s song). TSOG is a great listen, but a little free form. Makes for dope jams though
I say either
1) kidnap someone like Tom Petty or (gasp) Sweet Dave to Co-Author some meaningful words to new songs,
2) Revisit Gamehenge with Disc 1 a good recording of the original and Disc 2 live outtakes of GH-related tunes like LLama and PYIE, or
3) Write an album moe./Sticks-and-Stones style with songs about rehab and jail.

I’ve been seeing Phish since 1994. I was never one to go on tour. I always caught my fair amount of shows though. If they come back of course I would love to see the reunion show, but I’m not going to neglect my current life in order to do so. I would see them when they came to my hometown, and possibly try and catch a few on the road. A man has his own responsibilities in life, other than following four guys from Vermont around all the time. With that being said, I hope they come back! I enjoy the other aspects of Phish being around. The downloads, the setlists, the conversations on the internet, and the studio albums which I think would get much much better!
If the band is serious, and they intend to play with some heart (and balls) again, I would be straight back on the bus. Unfortunately the last time I saw any spark was Summer 2003. Most of 2004 was utter shite. I will NOT put up with a ridiculous bunch of phoned-in crap.
It’s obvious that the four of these guys cannot individually produce music on the same level as the group can collectively. I’m sure they (I’m looking at you, Trey) miss the adulation and energy of the fans, our Family Vibe. They already have truckloads of money at their disposal, so they don’t need a tour to fill their coffers with any more filthy lucre.
I will happily suspend my current life for a couple weeks of touring each year. My obligations are minimal. I already do it for Widespread and STS9, and those two bands have done a stellar job of filling a tremendous musical void that Phish left in my life. Widespread lost their main guy and STILL had the guts to keep going, keep pushing, keep trying – what’s your excuse, Trey?
What they need to do is revisit their current catalog of tunes and rework their classic songs. Learn some new cover songs that absolutely kill. Listen to Fall 1997 and reacquaint themselves with their inner Rock Gods / Funkmeisters. Make it fun, not work.
That being said, if they break my heart ONE MORE TIME… they are dead to me!
Look out for the 3.0 generation of horrible tour tweens, and the bitter 18 year olds who got in before “second hiatus.” Great band though. What the fuck?

If they come back it will have to be stadium shows or huge festivals. I think that other jam bands would welcome Phish back. Many are fans and besides it would bring a lot of new kids into the scene and wake up a lot of the old timers (like me).
I seriously fear for my music and professional careers if they reunite.
Dude, we’ve all been through a lot in the last few years and I don’t know about you guys. But I think life just hasn’t been the same. They are four of our best friends. And they miss us, just as we miss them. So, when they pick up the phone to call we should be excited to play wsith our buddies. Can’t wait to see youll again.
