Phish @ the Greek Theatre, Berkeley CA – Night Two: Setlist and Recap

Phish returned to the iconic Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA this evening for their second show of three at the venue. Tonight’s performance started innocently enough with Chalk Dust, Guyute and Ocelot before It’s Ice brought the energy up. What followed was an otherworldly Cities that quickly turned into a funk workout.

Keyboardist Page McConnell took the lead on the Cities jam and his mates were very patient in letting the exploration develop. After milking the Talking Heads cover for all it was worth, the quartet stopped for a second before bursting into Moma Dance – an interesting segue. Bathtub Gin and Stealing Time closed out a set that raised the bar from last night’s more laidback performance.

The second set was laden with jams and awkward segues. Rock and Roll started a second set for the fifth time in 2010 and once again the Velvet Underground tune acted as a springboard towards full band improvisation. Many twists and turns later it was time to take Ghost out for a spin. Phish varied tempos and explored a bunch of melodies before Anastasio seemingly had enough and forced his band mates into Mike’s Song making for an awkard transition. While Mike’s only contained one distinct jam it featured ferocious licks from Trey. The band took option #2 after Mike’s and played an extremely blissed out Simple that contained an extended jam. Short versions of Backwards Down The Number Line and Show of Life followed.

When Seven Below reared its head you might have thought it was time for one more Type II Situation. It wasn’t to be as another unique transition transpired pretty quickly as Weekapaug began. Weekapaug was nicely drawn out and You Enjoy Myself was nailed to end the second set before Good Times, Bad Times gave the show an arena rock finish. Phish returns to the Greek once more tomorrow night.
