Picture Show: ABB’s Wanee Festival
Fresh off its annual 67-night run at the Beacon Theater in New York, the Allman Brothers Band set up camp two weekends ago at the Spirit of The Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida for the band’s third annual Wanee Festival.
Joined by a laundry list of talented bands, the Allmans played sets each night of the festival, and Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes and Oteil Burbridge all played with their own outfits on the side. Having just been down in Florida for Langerado, neither Scotty nor I ventured down to the less-Jewish part of the state for the festivities. Nevertheless, our photographer George Weiss was on the scene, and he came back with the following awesome shots for all’a youse.

Since it’s billed as a family-type festival, who else would show up but Robert Randolph & the Family Band? He looks like he’s certainly feeling it:

The unwashed masses descend on the Panhandle for green grassĀ ’n high times:

Is there such a thing as a festival without Keller Williams? I think not.

I stood about five feet away from Oteil at one of those Allmans shows at the Beacon, and I’m not sure I’ve ever been so impressed by a bass player before.

There he is, Jon Voight dressed as Willie Nelson for Halloween. How much mileage can I get out of that joke? Tune in next time we review the ABB to find out.

My tone can beat up your tone!

Nickel Creek? They suck! No, that’s Nickelback. Oh, right. They suck!

Lookyhere, apparently Rusted Root is still a band, and they still tour. I bet they played Ecstasy, Send Me On My Way and then walked off stage…

Matt Abts of Gov’t Mule is starting to look like Jon Bon Jovi, no?

Gov’t Mule hangs a Gov’t Chicken from a speaker…

I know nothing about the Backyard Tire Fire. I wish them luck, though.

That’s just Keller being Keller:

Another shot of Nickel Creek, here’s Sara Watkins on the violin:

This Ruster Root singer has sweet fingerless gloves. Wasn’t it warm there?

Bubbles and hammocks, the ultimate crowd shot:

Anyone attend this badboy? Any reviews? Any nostalgic love for Rusted Root? We’d love to hear from someone that made it down there…

Keller’s eyes are giving me cotton mouth…
Does Spearhead know they held a festival without them?
One of the only interesting parts of the Langerado press conference was when Michael Franti said something to the effect of “we never play the same festival two years in a row.”
I thought that was pretty funny considering he was at Langerado in 2006.
the older I get, the more I feel like that kid in the blue shirt in the 3rd pic…

Okay, you forced it out of me, I was running from stage to stage with George when he was shooting the pics. But he missed the 3:00 a.m. golf cart ride on Sunday morning in the rain. I’ll send you the inside scoop on the Third Wanee Festival as soon as I can decipher my notes! It’s taken me this long to recover! This “mushrooming” festival just keeps getting better each year……
Randi
Gr8 time had by all my crew. The music was amazing and in my mind there is still no better venue to have such a festival. As for Rusted Root, the last time I saw them was Further Fest 1998. I was stoked to see them again ,and they didn’t let me down. See ya’ll next year. Peace and vegetables!
(R.I.P. Mr. L. You were there with us all!!!)

I’m the guy in the last picture in the middle. haha
From what I remember I had a great time at the last 2 Wanees and am going again this year!! I cannot wait. I fondly named this festival “Woodstork”—homage to our migrating-friendly bird. This event is also a way to reflect our primative yet peaceful selves with more trees to hug than a Bonnarroo. I encourage all to enjoy, age, race, gender it does not matter. By the way, this is the real Florida and don’t forget Suwanee Springs across the road outside the gate! Peace my good friends of all religions and walks. Let us be annointed the way the creator intended!!Steve Fant —Jacksonville
