Picture Show: Gregg Allman @ Bowery

We had seen Gregg’s tech carry Warren’s red Gibson onto the stage around 8:45. So there was little doubt that Warren, who is no stranger to that part of town, would play. Gregg brought him out for the ninth song of the set, Just Another Rider, which was the only original on the new record written by the two of them. After this, they went flying off into the first song that Gregg brought to his brother Duane upon joining the band in 1969 – Dreams was amazing as always. And Warrren made sure that Gregg “went up on the mountain.”

The set had lots of highlights. Hearing Gregg’s old friend Floyd sing Going Back to Daytona was special. And the songs from the new album were really enjoyable. Clearly T-Bone & Gregg selected wonderful old chestnuts. But the interesting parts of the set were Gregg’s choices of covering Dylan’s Just Like A Woman and the new arrangements of Whipping Post & Statesboro. His soulful voice on the Dylan classic with his Hammond B3 running through it was beautiful. The funky take on Whipping Post brought new life to this frankly overplayed classic. Same thing for this new take on Statesboro Blues. We all know how they sound on Live At Fillmore East (and that is how they sound night in and night out at Beacon). But what this band did with them was praiseworthy.

One of the beautiful things about living in this dirty old city is all of the music venues and the special shows you can catch. The only thing left to say about this night was that I’d take Gregg (or Warren or Derek) in a small venue like this over another Brothers show any day of the week.

Set: Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’, I’m No Angel, Just Like A Woman, Can’t Be Satisfied, You Must Be Crazy Baby, Rolling Stone, Little By Little, Just Another Rider*, Dreams*, Back to Daytona, Melissa, Just Before The Bullets Fly, Whipping Post, Floating Bridge, Statesboro Blues

* – w/ Warren Haynes

And with that, it was time to cross the bridge and head to Brooklyn Bowl for the Soul II Soul- Benefit for Haiti with Lettuce featuring Maceo Parker.
