Pomp and Circumstance: Trey Graduates

While most high school seniors are celebrating graduation this week, Phish’s Trey Anastasio spoke at a different kind of ceremony. Big Red cleared the way to resume his touring career, and the rest of his life, after graduating from the Washington County Drug Court this afternoon. In this video of the proceedings Trey eschews a Bonnaroo-style ramble for a brief, but heartfelt, speech thanking his family and court officials for helping him become happy and healthy.

Christen Gowan of the Times-Union captured the video above and wrote an article about today’s ceremony which reveals an interesting tidbit:

The jam band legend said he invited Whitehall Police Chief Richard LaChapelle, who arrested him in December 2006, to the recovery program’s graduation.

“I really wanted him to be here,” Anastasio said. “I remember thanking him in the police station ’cause I thought even that night I got arrested, that my life was finally being saved.”

That’s good stuff right there. We can’t wait to hear what he’s been writing and recording recently. Trey returns to the stage at the Rothbury Festival on July 6.
