Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Bit By Deer Tick

While out on vacation in San Francisco last week, I had the opportunity to take in a blistering show at The Independent from the Providence-based country-folk-rock act Deer Tick. The band, who is one of Brian Williams’ new favorites, tore through a raucous, two-plus hour off the cuff set that included loads of tracks from their latest release Born On Flag Day, a few stirring duets with Liz Isenberg, as well as covers from the likes of Bruce Springsteen, John Prine, John Mellencamp and George Thorogood.

The band mixes ’50s rockabilly with Nebraska-era folk and plaintive country laments with lead singer John McCauley’s charismatic stage presence and are a must see this summer. Let’s check out this live in-studio performance of Easy that the band did for Seattle radio station KEXP…

Deer Tick is currently on the road, and will wrap up their lengthy cross-country tour with two NYC area shows including a headlining show at Bowery Ballroom on July 24 and an opening slot at a free show with Grace Potter & The Nocturnals at Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Bandshell on August 7.

  1. They/he is great. War Elephant was one of my favorite albums of last year even though it was technically released in 2007. If you collect vinyl the 2 LP version of War Elephant is a must.
