Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Bring on the Cocker

Inspired by a late-Monday post by our friends over at Art Decade, we’re dipping our toes into the Joe Cocker waters today. Big Joe C may not be the most original musician in history, but apparently you really can make history by turning a handful of popular songs into even more popular songs — he’s basically that old guy from My Blue Heaven who says “You dirty rat” better than Steve Martin.

The live Mad Dogs & Englishmen album dropped in 1970, and there’s one song from that record that sees regular rotation on my iPod: The Letter. Arranged brilliantly and performed with like 400 people, the Wayne Carson Thompson tune couldn’t sound better than with Cocker’s legendary vocals and Leon Russell’s incredible piano.
