Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Bring on the Cocker
Inspired by a late-Monday post by our friends over at Art Decade, we’re dipping our toes into the Joe Cocker waters today. Big Joe C may not be the most original musician in history, but apparently you really can make history by turning a handful of popular songs into even more popular songs — he’s basically that old guy from My Blue Heaven who says “You dirty rat” better than Steve Martin.
The live Mad Dogs & Englishmen album dropped in 1970, and there’s one song from that record that sees regular rotation on my iPod: The Letter. Arranged brilliantly and performed with like 400 people, the Wayne Carson Thompson tune couldn’t sound better than with Cocker’s legendary vocals and Leon Russell’s incredible piano. Slade Sohmer
In 2006 Slade Sohmer founded Hidden Track along with current EiC Scott Bernstein. Slade ran the site until 2008, establishing a scope of coverage and level of professionalism that still exists today.
