Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Freak Flag Fly
I think I can speak for the entire HT Staff in saying that we were all bummed when Carrie Brownstein decided to part ways with NPR Music last October, after spending nearly three years blogging at Monitor Mix.
It was no surprise that Brownstein’s next move was to return to arguably what she does best – playing music, though she has proven herself to be a triple threat by adding acting into the fold too, starring in the highly entertaining Portlandia. With her former band Sleater-Kinney in the midst of the dreaded indefinite hiatus, Brownstein decided to try and form a new band with some friends, one of which was her former band mate Janet Weiss. Feeling an immediate chemistry after a handful of practice sessions, Wild Flag was born.
Nearly a year after announcing her intents via blog post, the band’s self-titled debut was released last week via venerable indie label Merge, which combines punky rhythms and riot grrl vocals with girl-group harmonies and a serious dose of psychedelic rock. Let’s check out the tongue-in-cheek video for the album’s lead track Romance…
Wild Flag heads out for a cross-country tour that kicks off on October 3, at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis, Minn., and includes a three-night run of New York City-area venues, with gigs scheduled at The Bell House (10/15), Maxwell’s (10/16) and Bowery Ballroom (10/18).
