We don’t have much in the way of traditions around my house come Thanksgiving time, but there is one that we do stick to every year and one that we started here at Hidden Track last year. For as long as I can remember New York’s classic rock station (which has rotated considerably over the years) has always played Arlo Guthrie’s satirically brilliant track Alice’s Restaurant Massacre at noon on Thanksgiving day.

When I was young listening to this song was more of a goof since it was a tune my dad really dug, but as I actually started listening to the lyrics of the smartly written song I came to really appreciate it and marvel at the fact that the version on the album was played live in concert. So when you have some time today or over the long weekend I highly recommend that you sit back and enjoy Guthrie’s 18-plus minute anti-establishment ode, that’s actually based on a true story. This version comes from a performance at the Guthrie Center in July of 2005…
