Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Herbie’s Imagination

Some two and a half years ago my very first post as a full time HT blogger centered around legendary keyboardist Herbie Hancock, who the night before had unexpectedly took home the Grammy for Album of the Year for River: The Joni Letters. Tomorrow, Hancock will release his follow up with The Imagine Project, a covers record that was recorded at different studios around the world and once again features him playing with an all-star line-up of musicians ranging from Dave Matthews to Lisa Hannigan to Jeff Beck, tackling songs from The Beatles, Bob Dylan, John Lennon and more.

The album, which is said to focus on the  “central themes of peace and global responsibility”, also features the former Miles Davis sideman teaming up with slide-guitar whiz Derek Trucks, his wife Susan Tedeschi along with their current band on the track Space Captain – originally made famous by Joe Cocker. Luckily the recording sessions were filmed for a companion DVD release, so we can watch these amazing musicians in action. Pay attention about 2/3rds of the way through the soul-infused track as Derek and Herbie lock in for some truly fantastic and inspired off-the-cuff soloing…

Herbie Hancock recently kicked off a lengthy world tour which features a special birthday show at New York’s Carnegie Hall that is being billed as Seven Decades: The Birthday Celebration on June 24, and a second at the Hollywood Bowl on September 1.
