Some two and a half years ago my very first post as a full time HT blogger centered around legendary keyboardist Herbie Hancock, who the night before had unexpectedly took home the Grammy for Album of the Year for River: The Joni Letters
The album, which is said to focus on the “central themes of peace and global responsibility”, also features the former Miles Davis sideman teaming up with slide-guitar whiz Derek Trucks, his wife Susan Tedeschi along with their current band on the track Space Captain – originally made famous by Joe Cocker. Luckily the recording sessions were filmed for a companion DVD release, so we can watch these amazing musicians in action. Herbie Hancock recently kicked off a lengthy world tour which features a special birthday show at New York’s Carnegie Hall that is being billed as Seven Decades: The Birthday Celebration on June 24, and a second at the Hollywood Bowl on September 1.
