Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Jump Into Sleater-Kinney

Last month, former Sleater-Kinney guitarist turned NPR blogger Carrie Brownstein dedicated a week’s worth of posts on Monitor Mix to discovering the music of Phish. Brownstein dove right into the deep end, and while at the end of the week she may not have fallen completely in love with the band, we have to commend her for her open-minded approach and effort. Since we’re firm believers in the karmic boomerang, we thought we’d use today’s ‘Tubes to throw some love back at her former band.

Hailing from the Olympia, WA – Sleater-Kinney was firmly entrenched in the Riot Grrl movement of the early ’90s putting out seven studio albums on indie labels Chainsaw Records, Kill Rock Stars and Sub Pop between 1995 and 2005, before going on an indefinite hiatus after an August 2006 show. The band’s music is a visceral mix of punk, prog and rock with – dare I even say – elements of psychedelia, with 1950s girl group vocals filtered through the Pacific Northwest’s alt.rock haze. Let’s check out the video for Jumpers off their last studio album The Woods
