Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Playin’ Dead, Part 2
Yesterday, we kicked off Grateful Dead week with a clip from 1972, so today we’ll go with a rare highlight from the Vince Welnick-era: one of four GD performances of Garcia/Hunter’s Reuben and Cerise. This tune first appeared on Garcia’s solo album Cats Under The Stars in 1978 titled Rubin and Cherise and subsequently in 1980 on Robert Hunter’s Jack O’ Roses under the name Reuben and Cerise.
The Jerry Garcia Band started playing R&C in 1977 and frequently performed the song through the group’s final run of shows in 1995. On March 17, 1991, the Grateful Dead busted out their version of Reuben and Cherise in front of a shocked crowd at the Cap Center in Landover. The band rocked the tune in Orlando less than a month later and a clip of that performance circulates. The quality of the video footage isn’t the best, but when sync’d with a fine soundboard recording it’s well worth checking out.

that was great, but man was vince terrible. there are few synth lines he plays that are just so cheesy.

I thought that was a lot of fun – I agree about Vince being terrible – He could have done the album synth lines – It feels raw and unrehearsed, like Jerry didn’t know how to wrap it up, but its great. It’s a tough tune to do with all those lyrics!
