Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Robert Randolph’s Way

Fronted by a guy who played a instrument that was more widely known by country music fans, Robert Randolph & The Family Band burst onto the jam scene in the early aughts by earning a reputation for playing incendiary live shows that incorporated the traditions of sacred steel music with groove-based rock, funk, gospel and R&B. Signed to Warner Brothers Records, the band’s first two studio albums – Unclassified and Colorblind – didn’t quite capture the magic of what endeared the group to so many live music fans with a seemingly slickly polished, over-produced sound.

With their latest studio effort – We Walk This Road – which hit stores late last month, Randolph & Co. are looking to remedy that. The pedal-steel whiz teamed up with uber-producer T-Bone Burnett who took a back-to-basics approach by mixing traditional music with covers by Prince, Bob Dylan and John Lennon along with a handful of originals. The album’s first single features Ben Harper guesting on their version of legendary blues man Blind Willie Johnson’s If I Had My Way. Check it out…

Robert Randolph & The Family Band hit the road later this week for a show at Live At The Garden in Memphis, TN on July 23.
