After weeks of letting the episodes pile up on my DVR I finally sat down to watch Elvis Costello’s new talk show on the Sundance Channel – Spectacle: Elvis Costello With… and have been absolutely mesmerized by Costello’s intelligence and wit in engaging his guests. Costello seems to have a knack for getting people to open up from Lou Reed revealing the “secret chord” in Sweet Jane to Elton John talking about his love of The Band.

The hour long show is book ended by musical performances featuring Costello first doing a cover song by his guest and ending with a collaboration with them with some music interludes sprinkled throughout it. For the Lou Reed episode Costello turned the Velvet’s classic Femme Fatale into an Americana-style song, featuring Larry Campbell on mandolin. Check out this fantastically innovative performance…
