Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Wax On, Wax Off

Over the years, the Newport Folk Festival has had its share of memorable moments and success stories that have helped propel little known bands into the national spotlight. Adding to that growing list that in recent years has included the likes of the Felice Brothers, Deer Tick and The Low Anthem is David Wax Museum. Last summer, the Boston-based act was the winner of Magic Hat’s Big Opener Contest beating out over 150 other bands for the opportunity to play the legendary festival, where they played an late morning/early afternoon Sunday set at the Quad Stage.

The roots-folk act left an indelible mark on the folks at NPR Music, who were broadcasting live from the fest and have been championing the act since this summer. NPR recently invited them to perform as part of the Tiny Desk Concert series, while Paste anointed them the “breakout band” of the fest. The band, who fuse traditional Mexican folk with country, folk and rock to arrive at a sound they’ve dubbed Mexo-Americana, will release their third studio effort Everything Is Saved next Tuesday, and recently premiered the music video for the album’s lead track – Born With A Broken Heart…

David Wax Museum will kick off a month-long tour with a sold-out hometown CD release show on Thursday at Oberon in Cambridge, MA.
