With the first major jamband event of the month coming to a close last night, we now turn our attention to the other – the annual rite of Spring here in New York City otherwise known as the Allman Brothers Band residency at the Beacon. The Brothers, who will be celebrating their 40th anniversary this year, are no strangers to the island of Manhattan having played the Beacon a mind-blowing 175 times over the years.
Before commandeering the former movie house on Upper West Side the Allmans came to fame as the de facto house band at the Fillmore East in the early 1970s – gracing the stage of the historic venue 27 times and recording arguably one of the best live albums of all time there – At Fillmore East

I would like to set the record straight re: Jeffrey Greenblatt’s piece on the Allman Brother’s upcoming run at the Beacon. I adore the band and will be there. However, as a member of the Joshua Light Show and Joe’s Lights and former house photographer at the Fillmore East I can guarantee that the Allmans played Fillmore East “only” 15 times, not 27. They were the theater’s “second” house band after the Grateful Dead who were the group who played FE 27 times. If anyone wants to dispute this they can check out the Bill Graham Presents database appendix in my book “Live at the Fillmore East: A Photographic Memoir.”
Anyway, I’d like to be on record not as a nit picker here, and want to let it be known that, in my humble opinion, the Allman Brothers Band annual run at the Beacon theater is the closest concert experience we have today in 2009 that rivals, and is as satisfying, as the shows used to be at the Fillmore East. Not to be missed!

Hey Amalie just want to say I love, love, love your book! Thanks for stopping by our humble site. I got that number from the Allman’s website, they played 27 sets of music at the Fillmore East – I counted early and late shows as different sets, so that’s how I ended up with the number 27 – but I will go back and double check that too.
