Return of 30db – Bayliss & Austin + Van Ghost in Chicago

After nearly a year between performances, Jeff Austin of Yonder Mountain String Band and Brendan Bayliss of Umphrey’s McGee brought back their 30db project last night at The Abbey Pub in Chicago. The pair, who are working on new material, debuted a taste of their most recent work and played plenty of tunes from 2010’s One Man Show as well as a few covers during the acoustic performance.

HT faves Van Ghost started the evening with an acoustic performance (all acoustic guitars plus electric bass and a small drum kit) that also featured new material. Van Ghost debuted originals 3 Sides To The Story and If It Ain’t Crazy, It Ain’t Love during their set and performed a bluegrass arrangement of Modern Day Love Affair. For their final song, the members of Van Ghost welcomed Bayliss and Austin up to the stage to pay tribute to Levon Helm with a cover of I Shall Be Released.

Also of note, Bayliss and Austin unveiled a song called Cut The Cable which is based on a “Jimmy Stewart” segment from Umphrey’s McGee’s performance of Ringo on November 5, 2011.
