Review: Dr. Dog @ The Vic

Included in the mélange were two new pieces, Black-Red and Nobody Knows Who You Are. Both songs exemplified Dr. Dog’s finesse for solid song writing and delivery, staying true to the band’s authentic sound while pushing the musicians forward. Headed by McMicken Black-Red started with a pop, reggae rock groove that was borderline new wave. Miller stepped forward pushing his keyboard to the forefront of the tune with off beat syncopations, enriching additional musical tinkering in the song’s folds. Nobody Knows Who You Are had a celebratory feel good vibe contrasted with anonymous confessional, possibly derelict, lyrics.

Accentuating Dr. Dog’s heartfelt musings was an equally illuminating light show of Technicolor bliss. Enthusiastic fans basked in the yellows, pinks and greens spotlighting the stage as they bounced and clapped to the beats. Dr. Dog played roughly 20 songs in what felt like a half hour. I for one danced and sang until the show concluded with the candid Jackie Wants a Black Eye.
