Review: Furthur @ Red Rocks

What transpired on Saturday night September 25, 2010 was nothing short of miraculous. Every element of a great live musical experience conspired to create a unique portal of musical enjoyment.

The weather – a perfect 80 during the day and a cool 70 after dark.
The moon – nearly full, rising in an orange glow, appearing just above the rocks behind the stage during Dark Star.
Venue security – by all accounts benevolent and tolerant, if not downright accommodating.
The crowd – young and old, energized and mellow, friends and strangers.
The band – firing on all cylinders, with 70 year old Phil Lesh relentlessly driving the band on his bass guitar.

And I will spare you, the live music fan, with long descriptions of something that will be evident once you are able to LISTEN TO THE SHOW FOR YOURSELF.

Make sure to listen for places where Phil keeps the tempo up. Listen to Joe Russo throw a fill on top of a fill, playing more notes than should be possible. Listen to Bobby Weir sing sweetly and not fuck up the lyrics. And listen to the sweetest Stella Blue the post-Jerry era has ever seen.

From one live music fan to another, I encourage you to just listen to the music play!

“On days like these, it is good to be a Deadhead.”

  1. wow…that actually makes me want to give this latest post-dead outfit a chance. I’ve pretty much given up on all of these unless a stumble into a ticket day of show.

congrats Ted – you’ve got another one back to the flock

  2. “On Saturday September 25, 2010, Furthur played one of the best shows I have ever seen at Red Rocks. Period.

I realize that’s a big statement, but I can back it up. By anyone’s estimation I have seen my fair share of amazing shows at Red Rocks over the last 14 years; Neil Young in the rain, Radiohead, Bjork, Wilco, every single Widespread Panic show they’ve headlined, several incarnations of Phil Lesh and his friends, Gov’t Mule, Trey, The Arcade Fire, Sigur Ros… etc.”

Did you go to the PIXIES show there on 6.5.05? That was one incredible, rocking, perfect show from top to bottom.

FURTHUR kills it! They are amazing. Sure, there are some off nights, but they have a great group of people and are really getting “out there”. Can’t wait to see ’em again.

  4. I’m with Ted. It occurred to me on that incredible evening that I’ve been to Red Rocks at least 150 times. Probably closer to 200. A dear friend was celebrating his 40th and lets just say, the tribe was in full force. Furthur delivered one of the most fun evenings I’ve experienced at Red Rocks and that’s saying something. Everywhere I looked, my deadhead family was there dancing, smiling providing the constant reminder that none of us would ever have met if it hadn’t been for the Grateful Dead. It was a magical evening. Thanks guys. To say I’m Grateful is an understatement.

  5. I was at the show on Saturday @ redrocks..! Travled all the way from Charlotte NC. It was an amazing and magical evening! The moon rising above the stage was beautiful. So happy to have been a part of it.

  6. went to the vegas & all 3 red rock shows for furthur, every show was simply amazing. Jerry is smiling and so are all the fans. Thanks guys…Furthur is real and sweet.

  7. Gratefully, I was there too. And, Ted is right, the most spectacular show I have at RR as well. The only disagreement I have is with his comments on security…a Nazi at the upper entrance was more than a bit over the top. But once inside, no worries.
The music was transcendental…listen to the show!

  8. How sweet it is, those boy’s are really sounding like the real thing. A breath of fresh wind tearing through the soul high on a mountain top, don’t get much better than that. In my opinion the best dead show in maybe 20 years. LET IT GROW! RR ROCKS!

  9. I was also there, and just wanted to say the whole experience was awesome. It was my first time at r rocks, sure wish i would have seen the grateful dead play r rocks, one question though why did bobby hardly sing that nite

  10. Bobby didn’t sing b/c this was John K’s night…and he killed! Bobby was his usual “presence” on Friday and Sunday nights. Saturday, though, was magical…John K was channeling Jerry (if you were there, you know what I mean). Best post-Jerry show, period.
