Review: Lucero @ Music Hall of Williamsburg

Working through their entire repertoire, and easily blending material that spanned from their first six albums as well as their soon to be released Universal Music Group record, the band moved deftly from hard rockers to ballads about hard drinking, women and guilt. Working without a set list, the band mixed in requests from the crowd with the band’s own favorites. Lead singer/guitarist Ben Nichols also treated everyone to a few tracks off his recently released solo album, The Last Pale Light in the West. Ben thanked the crowd profusely, like a true southern gentleman, for indulging him and his “concept album” on a Saturday night.

The band seemed at home with the crowd – switching from hard, heavy to sweet and sad at a moment’s notice, even giving hugs and high fives from the stage at times. And the crowd of course loved every moment of it. With a three song encore, a piano duel and even a Chariots of Fire theme song, the two hour long set had a little something for both longtime fans and those new to Lucero. The night was filmed for a dvd so hopefully you’ll get to catch this performance too.

Lucero’s tour with Titus Andronicus continues tonight at the Southgate House in Newport, Kentucky. before they head to Indianapolis on Friday and Lexington on Saturday. You can also catch Lucero at the Wakarusa Music Festival in Ozark, Arkansas on June 6.
