Review: Mike Gordon @ Fox Theatre

Middle of the Road kicked off the second set, and the Beatles’ She Said, She Said opened the band up for some of the most experimental jamming of the night. A raucous guitar solo went ambient, Cactus slapped his bass on what sounded like a Foam tease, some lasers shot through the room and the lights were turned off while River Niger jammed right back into a perfectly set up She Said, She Said.

Another Max Creek song a la Murawski – Cruel World – featured yet again a great solo by Cleary on keys. Sugar Shack came roaring right through, and with the double percussion backbone provided by Craig Myers and Todd Isler to complement Cactus’ patterned bass, the song seemed to finally sound full – unlike most Phish versions I’ve heard.

Dig Further Down is one of a handful of songs in Gordon’s repertoire that could be called rocking, and Saturday’s version definitely lived up to that title as Gordon and Murawski’s theatrics jumped and landed at the moment of chordal impact. The encore, Alanis Morissette’s Hand In My Pocket, put a surprising, funny, but joyful cap on the theme for the night, as Murawski sung the lyrics, “I’ve got one hand in my pocket, and put the other one up for a high five,” before sending us on our merry way.

  1. twas a good show in my opinion. It was also cool to see Mike walk up and down the street without attracting too much attention to himself while I waited to get inside.
