Review: moe. @ Ogden Theater

The big question before set two was whether or not they’d capitalize on the energy with which they walked off stage. The answer would lie in the first few notes. The quintet meandered their way through Haze until they seemed to randomly stumble upon Dr. Graffenberg. This song is almost always a strong showing and this version proved no different, as Derhak led the groove straight into space and right back with a powerful kick, but One Life was a thorn in the side of the life that had been pumped into the show.

Derhak’s bass again soon shook the room though, with the punchy Billy Goat before Understand brought some calm back. Kyle’s Song kept the feeling light, and snaked its way through a million cracks and crevices of previously unexplored musical territory, before finding its way happily into Moth. If the show had been lacking in energy – or at least feeding it to us unsteadily – before, there was no way they were about to let the encore go the same way. The thrashing of Mar-DeMa opened up into Spine of a Dog to send us on our way into a snowstorm that had dropped more than a couple inches on the Mile High City since the doors had opened.

  1. Not only is Hot for Teacher a Van Halen song, Motley “Crew” is spelled Crue. Great review other than that.
