Rob Koritz Talks About Dark Star’s Future

Earlier today, we told you about the somewhat surprising news that John Kadlecik has resigned from his position as Jerry Garcia in the Dark Star Orchestra. We say “somewhat” because if you read our interview with Kadlecik from a few weeks back it was pretty clear the writing for today’s announcement was on the wall.

Our own Chad Berndtson followed up on that interview by speaking with DSO’s Rob Koritz about Kadlecik’s departure from the group for Glide. Rob speaks openly about the timeline of John’s decision and what the future holds for the Dark Star Orchestra. Take a look…

Let’s stay with the John decision a minute. When did he inform you guys that he planned to resign?

We first found out in August or September that there would be more Furthur. We’d just come off tour and we were about to go on one of the longest breaks we’ve ever taken. We knew about it then and we thought that he was going to be able to do both. Then, we got a call letting us know that he wasn’t going to be able to do it in 2010 [Dark Star]. We were all taken aback by it — we thought he might be able to do both. You know I can’t speak for John. I don’t know what they asked him. I know for certain that they want to have him be available as much as possible, and you know, maybe there’s other mitigating factors. He’s been doing this for 12 years so that might have been part of it, too.

Head over to Glide for the complete interview but let us know what you think of Kadlecik’s decision by leaving a comment below.

  1. I think it’s weak on John’s part that he is already leaving DSO. There is no way of knowing how long Furthur is going to last, in 2011 he could be out of a job.

  2. I think that this is a great exposure gig for John, which I hope he gets a lot of since Phil is likely to use him up and dump him quickly….just like everyone else that’s been in band or crew for Phil’s post-Grateful Dead projects.
