Welcome to a special Saturday edition of Stormy Mondays. It’s not everyday that the truly momentous anniversaries role around, and when they do, it’s worth celebrating a little. Today is the fortieth anniversary of one of the single greatest sets ever played by the Grateful Dead.

February 13, 1970 found the Dead at the Fillmore East at the absolute apex of their early psychedelic era, working through the most familiar (by that point) of material in the most utterly majestic way: Dark Star > Cryptical Envelopment > Other One > Cryptical Envelopment > Lovelight. Nothing short of breathtaking, the triptych is a perfectly balanced affair, each section stretching half an hour, and covers a full range of musical brilliance as only Grateful Dead music can. There is a moment in Dark Star when Garcia screams out a line that even after all these years just about tears my spine right out of my body. This the very, very, very, very best the band has to offer, the definition of classic. Turn it up as loud as you can, and enjoy!
