Steely Dan: Bust Out Recap

Steely Dan continue their Rent Party tour on Friday night in Los Angeles where they’ll kick off a four night stand at the spacious Gibson Amphitheater. As with the other multi-night runs on the tour, the Dan will start their shows with Aja in its entirety on the first night, Gaucho on the second, The Royal Scam on the third and finish with an Internet Request night.

We thought we’d take this opportunity to review some of the songs/versions of songs that have been busted out so far this tour…

  • Any Major Dude: Shelved after the ’96 Tour
  • Dr. Wu: Never Played Live Until Boston
  • Gaucho: Previously Sung by Walter Becker. Donald Fagen sang the song on the nights the Dan covered the album
  • Haitian Divorce: Same as Gaucho
  • My Rival: Never Played Live Until Boston
  • Reelin’ In The Years: Now Playing the original arrangement
  • Rikki Don’t Lose That Number: Shelved after the ’96 Tour
  • Sign In Stranger: Shelved after the ’94 Tour

Hopefully we’ll see some more rarities such as Western World and Gold Teeth busted out before the tour ends in Detroit on September 5. Much thanks and credit to Beast of the Dandom Guestbook for the bust out rundown.

  1. Gold Teeth would be awesome. One of my favorite Dan songs. I like Part II also but the first one is where it’s at.

  2. “Although, Fagen sings both ‘Gaucho’ and ‘Haitian’ on the albums. Was he singing them in concert up until recently?”

Yeah, I wondered about this too. That is the only plausible interpretation I could glean.

    1. Exactly, Walter was singing both Gaucho and Haitian Divorce in concert the last few tours. When the band played the albums in their entirety recently, Fagen handled the lead vocals on both tunes as he did on the albums.

  3. Becker sang Haitian in Boston when I saw them a few years back and it was not very good. I imagine that’s what was happening with Gaucho as well.

Hitting the three LA shows this weekend, can’t wait!

  4. Got it! All makes sense now. Yes, Fagen’s voice is sooo much better than Becker’s. Although Becker’s last solo album was pretty damn good.
