Stormy Mondays: A Peak at ’10

We’ll kick off the new year at Stormy Mondays with a quick listen to a few bands you should watch in the coming months. First is Surprise Me, Mr. Davis comprised of The Slip and Nathan Moore, although nowadays it’s actually more accurate to say 3/4ths of SMMD sometimes plays as The Slip. Regardless, SMMD hits us with Everything Must Go from a November gig.

Following that is Northern California’s own regional superstars Mother Hips who have a fantastic new album out (Pacific Dust) and a slot on the Jam Cruise–I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they gain a national audience over the course of the year. Their track is Mission in Vain from early ’07. Next is The Low Anthem with The Horizon is a Beltway from the sleeper hit of last year Oh My God Charlie Darwin, an awesome concept album that earned a bit of NPR love, which never hurt anyone.

But it’s not all looking ahead.  The year ended with sadness at the passing of Vic Chestnutt. Likely, like most Hidden Track readers, I first came to his music through Widespread Panic, such as the Let’s Get Down to Business here, which fits right into the Americana vibe of the mix. Finally to close things out, just because it kicks a little tail, is Gov’t Mule with guest Jackie Greene crushing Southern Man from 09’s Pre Christmas Jam set. Happy New Year, and as always, enjoy!
