Stormy Mondays: Acoustic Guitar Jazz

Due to Monday’s GSW fluff-a-thon, we’re running Stormy Mondays today.

I’m on a serious jazz/groove bender lately, so this week’s Stormy Monday follows hot on the heels of episodes featuring The Bad Plus and MMW with a healthy dose of acoustic guitar jazz in two tracks. The first is The Winding Way from Dave Holland in a rare performance featuring Fareed Haque. The Chicago based Paki-fusion master of nimble fingers had a short run at the start of a single tour in the mid-90’s, and fit in perfectly with the group’s heady tone, even pushing it toward an Asia Minor feel. It’s a long, warm track worth multiple listens; it’s a favorite midwinter fire place tune.

The second track comes courtesy of Gov’t Mule, not exactly a name synonymous with jazz. But this cover of Afro Blue with Woody is something else entirely, a performance that would have made Trane smile (and yes I know it’s a Mongo Santamaria song). Turn it up real loud and scare the neighbors. As always, enjoy!
