Furthur is about to finish their short summer tour, after which band members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh will play a couple festival dates with their own projects. Phil will be toting out an undisclosed version of Phil and Friends at Gathering of the Vibes and All Good, while Bob will perform at the same fests alongside Bruce Hornsby and Branford Marsalis.
The Coney Island Furthur shows over this past weekend were billed as the band’s final NYC area appearance for the year, and rumors swirl about the band being shelved as Phil seems increasingly happy to play at his Terrapin Crossroads and Bobby is exploring his acoustic side. But then rumors have swirled since this band started, and you if were just waiting for them to call it quits, you missed a lot of excellent music from the most Deadsy of post GD bands. Case in point, the end of the second set from Furthur’s July 28, 2011 performance at the Raleigh Amphitheater, our featured selection this week: Morning Dew, Mountains of the Moon > Let It Grow.
The Dew here is excellent, especially as the final jam builds and Kadlecik unleashed his inner growl while Phil drops big sliding notes. But what’s really stunning is the absolutely majestic Mountains. The psychedelic masterpiece soars here, and the jam between the second and third verses is a must hear.
