Stormy Mondays: Kick Ass Rock

Heading in the exact opposite direction of last week’s jazzy tendencies, this week’s Stormy Monday features good old-fashioned kick ass rock and roll.

The mix opens with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals from their live EP released late last year with a nasty, nasty track called Sugar. You can hear her classic rock roots here, so it’s only natural that the following cut is Warren Haynes and Friends (Medeski, Abts & Schools ) from the epic 2/2/05 gig at the Bowery Ballroom doing Cream’s Politician. It’s still my favorite Warren gig, but there’s no substitute for real Cream (in fact Grace sings “All I need is a little cream“ in that first joint), so we also have the power trio itself doing Tales of Brave Ulysses.

Heading into the homestretch is an early, entirely breathtaking KVHW version of City of Tiny Lights – Ray White at his absolute best. And the capper is a mid ’80s Down By the River from Rock Hall of Fame member Neil Young with a stunning jam late in the song. Turn it up loud, and as always, enjoy!
