Stormy Mondays: MMW w/ Trey Anastasio

2010 has been a big year for tenth anniversaries, and one of the last is also one of my favorites. Medeski, Martin & Wood’s fall tour, which featured guitarist and singer Oren Bloedow, whose album featured the trio as the session band, and percussionist Cyro Baptista, made its way to Upstate New York at the very beginning of December.

About half way through the second set on December 1 at Albany’s Palace Theatre, Billy Martin announced a third, very special guest, “Family man, Trey Anastasio.” There is of course the infamous 1995 Trey sit-in with the funky fusionists, when Red just can’t keep up or even find his place for that matter, and the trio soldiers on, leaving him in the dust. That debacle may be why this gig from the Palace Theater is so often overlooked, but in fact it falls on the other end of the spectrum. Trey jumps right in flow, chunking out slick rhythm guitar and offering up lead after scorching lead. It’s meeting of the mutual admiration society, and the result is a fantastic 50 minutes of groove mastery. As always, enjoy!

  1. 10 yrs ago already?!? god i’m old. this was my 1st mmw show, not counting seeing them @ the palace backing john scofield in 98 (sans billy m.), and i’d just seen the first shows of phish’s first final tour at the knick in september, so i was very pleasantly surprised when he took the stage. the whole show was a mind blower from the get go and trey was the icing on what was already a “top ten” show for me. while i agree that it took a bit for him to find his place, from my memories of the show and my copies of the tapes, i think trey was otherwise right in the pocket, playing with them as opposed to getting out in front. it was “just right.” a sweet sweet show, thanks for sharing.
