YEMblog Unveils Pre-Tour Goodies

Written by on 06.07.2010 | Phish

As if we weren’t already pumped for Phish to hit the stage at Chicago’s Toyota Park on Friday for the Summer Tour opener, our friends at YEMblog have put the best recordings your ears have heard of some legendary moments in the band’s history into public circulation. Last June, Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro hosted two From The Archives broadcasts for Radio Bonnaroo. While a few intrepid fans recorded the stream, the Pre-FM source files have yet to make its way into mass circulation…until today.

This afternoon you’ll finally get to hear gems such as the famed Radio City Ghost, After Midnight from Big Cypress and the St. Louis ’94 Tweezer the way they were meant to be heard. These files are the real deal and while info on source is limited to “Pre-FM”, rest assured this is the definitive recording of the Bonnaroo FTA shows. Today, YEMblog has posted links to file sets featuring the V0 MP3s, AACs and FLACs of the June 12, 2009 From The Archives broadcast for your listening pleasure with a promise of the second broadcast to come later this week.

After listening to the Radio City Ghost six times we’re blown away by all the little details you pick up from this crisp recording as opposed to the other sources that have circulated in the past. The same can be said for the scorching After Midnight segment. It’s been quite some time since a recording of this nature has come down the pike, so be sure to download the files in your favorite format and clear your schedule for a bit because this is some “must-hear” goodness.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The B List: The Best Concert DVDs of 2009

[Originally Published: December 24, 2009]

Making a list of the Best Concert DVDs of 2008 was a struggle, because there weren’t many quality releases to choose from. This year, we have the opposite problem as there were tons of terrific Concert DVD releases.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the Best Concert DVDs of 2009…

10. Arcade Fire – Miroir Noir

arcade_fire_miroir_noir-dvd

Arcade Fire fans were thrilled when the band announced they would be releasing a concert film chronicling the recording of Neon Bible and the subsequent tour. Unfortunately, director Vincent Morisset works so hard at not being a typical concert film that the documentary, which appears to be shot by cell phone cameras at points, isn’t all that entertaining. The bonus material makes Miroir Noir worth owning and earns it a spot on this list.

9. Return to Forever – Live at Montreux 2008

126733-large

Legendary jazz fusion supergroup Return to Forever reunited in 2008 and this DVD gives a good illustration of how good this group of musicians continues to be. Filmed in Montreux, Return to Forever Returns contains a nice of mix of tunes from all of their albums played with passion and verve.

Phish drummer Jon Fishman came home tonight as Phish rocked the War Memorial in Syracuse for the first time since November 4, 1994. In a show that was high-energy from the first note to the last, Phish fed off the crowd at the intimate gym and even busted out Mike Gordon’s frenetic metal tune Big Black Furry Creatures From Mars for the first time since reuniting.
