The Dead To Tour In ’09

For those of you who didn’t catch this item yesterday on Jambands.com, there is some big news coming out of the Grateful Dead camp. Take a look…

Sources confirm that the surviving members of the Grateful Dead — guitarist Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh, and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann — are planning to tour in April and May of 2009. There’s no word yet on the band’s configuration — previous configurations of “The Dead” and The Other Ones have included singer-guitar hero Warren Haynes, guitar ace Jimmy Herring, singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi, singer Joan Osborne, keyboardists Jeff Chimenti and Rob Baracco, as well as guitarists Mark Karan and Steve Kimock.

Also in the works, likely for October 13, is a second Deadheads For Obama concert, planned for the swing state of Pennsylvania.

The first Deadheads for Obama concert took place at the Warfield in San Francisco — with Weir, Hart, Lesh, drummer John Molo, keyboardist Steve Molitz, guitarist Larry Campbell, pedal steel player Barry Sless, singer-guitarist Jackie Greene, and Karan — on the eve of the California Democratic primary.

The Dead allied with Obama after Lesh’s son began volunteering for Obama’s campaign.

“This is the real deal,” Lesh said of Obama then. Report by Richard B. Simon

2009 could be a big year for jamband reunions, and we couldn’t be more excited.

  1. They just keep beating on this dead horse, huh . all this good NEW music going on and now all we will hear about is how The Dead is touring again, until Phish comes back. Maybe I shouldnt call them a dead horse but cash cows. Now go make your gooballs and peddle your crystal necklaces and ugly ass tie dyed tees, put on your patch work pants, grow your dreds, dont spin around the tapers section, get up to date on your drug knowledge, know whos side your going to stand, talk about your fav Dead year(even thought your werent there), have those phoney conversations about peace, love and family, get a bus, leave the shoes, gather the drum circle, you are now a hipster I mean hippy.

  2. c,mon new age…..it’s all about the music…don’t be a hater, I don’t dig drugs or wear tye dye and was there for the great year of 1977!.how about Larry Campbell on lead Pauly?

  3. hey FUCK YOU new age piece of shit!! you call your self an outlaw and your talking shit about the dead!! kick rocks kid!!! the grateful dead is about family, love, community, freedom, taking risks, but most of all about the music and the message and freedom it brings to the people who really hear. your to much of a fasciest to understand what freedom. stop acting like a nazi. dont judge just because you dont like tour kids because they have more fun and live a better life than you. and what is up with all the hippie bashing? Im sorry you had a bad experience or that youre just too judgemental. hater…
but the dead is comming and if youre not grateful then stay off my lot or you might get spun.

  4. 1) I was actually at a lot of those old shows. I still listen to a lot of Grateful Dead, along with hiphop, jazz, bluegrass, and your mom. However the interesting thing is it’s fine if you weren’t there – that’s the magic of live recordings. There are a lot – a LOT – of kids on Archive.org and bt.etree.org getting up to speed on Dead music and that’s awesome to see. If it speaks to you, it’s real – if you’re just doing it for the dope and hope of loose women, you’re a lame poser, but we had plenty of those on tour back in the day so it’s nothing new.
    2) I like Obama & want one of those t-shirts (yes Oliver they are making more, get one quick when they come out).
    3) I do not think “the Dead” are very good. In fact, their show here in Portland was – and this is no exaggeration, and I am not a hater by nature – it was in the running for the very worst live show I have ever seen. It was agonizingly bad.
    4) Gooballs are usually overpriced, but are fun. Dreads on white kids are silly, but being a hippie (latter day or old skool) is largely about the freedom to be silly if you want. And dude, even crappy tie dyes do amazing things to your eyes when you’re tripping. There, I let the secret out, that why we wear ’em: ’cause they twist and crawl around when you’re dosed. And my tie dyes aren’t crappy, btw: they’re works of art.

So I won’t be going back again. I’d see a phish show tho, if they’re actually practicing again, and decide to come to the West Coast (ha!)

  6. Dead to tour this spring!??!? Fuck yes. the first summer of the Dead with Joan Ozborne was good…. [she was great with them] but not all that tight… second time around with Warren was FAB! Count me in…

  7. new age outlaw, I am sorry you are a miserable judgemental person. Everybody likes different things. We are not hating on your interests. Should everyone be like you and like what you like?! The Grateful Dead is one of the most amazing bands to ever live and their millions of hardhore fans around the world prove this. Actions speek louder than words my friend. Look around. With all things great there is good and bad. The positive aspects of the Dead and their fans outweigh the negatives. All of these new great jam bands were inspired by the Dead, including Phish. If it wasnt for them the music world and the world would be different.
    God Bless The Grateful Dead

  8. It has been some time and I have not been to a show since 1995. It is about the music. It is about the people. It is about the unity. My own personal belief is Jesus Christ and I was very happy to hear Jerry record “Amazing Grace” right before he passed. God must have wanted Jerry all to Himself, “playing in the band”!!! I love The Dead… always have… always will. Drum circles under the bridge at RFK… dancing with the Family in the mountains of Vermont…. Chiln’ in the hustle and bustle of The Big Apple on our way to the Theatre. Man… beach balls and balloons, tie-dyes and floaters, a burrito walking down Shakedown St…. “I need a miracle… looking for a miracle.”…. oh just to get into the show… marking the curbs with our feet they were so dirty… making pancakes and rice in mass quantities to feed the peeps… doses, doses, doses (those silent whispers that brought us so many colors).
This will be my first time back around the band and I am excited. I will be bringing a new generation with me. The years have been good to me and I am alive. Lookin’ forward to jammin’ boys.

  9. Older now with more goin on…. I have not been keppin’ up with the new scene lately…Nice to know I have something to look forward to in April and May… Went to the “Terrapin-Family Reunion” at Alpine in 02’… That was a blast! Brought back sweet memories… Saw old friends…. made new ones…. actually met someone for the first time who lives two blocks away from me…. I alawys said as a kid that ” if the BAND is still around when I’m old and turning grey, I will go… Looks like this is comin true’ …. By the way Im only 40… But I am turning grey…. Another thing, Phil and Bob… If you read this, and decide to put Philly on the tour list, Please for the love of good accoustics…. PLAY THE MANN…. Say NO to THE TWEETER….

  10. hey can i get spun if i say i hate the dead? I,ll be the guy with the fake cop uniform on it will look real as hell but watch out for those greedy narco republicans just do ‘a splash me-drive by’ then run fast cause i’ll pretend like im chasin you.

  11. Hahaha, notice that that asshole didn’t have anything else to say. I had the time of my life at the Other Ones show in ’02. Also at the Dead with Warren Motherfucking Haynes in ’03? or ’04 Can’t remember. I don’t know, maybe it was the doses….Hehehe. Super excited for this.

  12. Hopefully they don’t bring Warren Haynes with them.
Please have either Mark Karan, Steve Kimock, Barry Sless, or Jimmy Herring maybe John Scofield or even Larry Campbell for that matter but please leave Warren out of it. His guitar sound doesn’t fit with the Dead’s sound and his voice is horrible. He sounds like southern-blues and 80’s hairband guitar wah-wah. He is very overrated and Im no hater what he does on his own time with Mule is probably sweet but he doesn’t belong on stage with The Dead. We all seen that in 04 with some of those cheezy covers he butchered.
Don’t whine and call me a hater I just know what sounds good and it aint Warren kids.

  13. To my friend of the devil(New age outlaw)’
What a sad hater you are. Millions of people LOVE The Dead. Obviously you don’t understand the magic of The Dead. That’s fine but to diss them as you have only makes you look like the tool you probably are. We are all about being free to have your own opinions and respecting other people. But as for your ignorance, don’t put it past my hippie ass to bitch slap you. Maybe you should go eat a goo ball and chill the fuck out. You really suck. Karma says: your new year will suck. As for The Dead fans, we need this miracle!
    Thank you God.

  14. Wah….Wah…Wah….Phish is the greatest jam band ever…Wah Wah Wah…The Dead just want to make money….their beating a dead horse….Wah Wah Wah Phish is the best….I love Trey….Trey’s a god…..Anyone that doesn’t like Phish is stupid….Phish are so cool…..music started with Phish…..there isn’t any music besides Phish….Trey is awesome…..Trey is the best in the world…..I’m a follower….I wasn’t around to see the Dead so Phish rules and the Dead suck…….Phish is better than anyone else….Phish rules……Phish is the greatest band ever…..I don’t even know what good music is……Phish should be the only band that ever exists anymore…..Phish is rad….Trey is the new Jerry…..I would do anything for Phish and Trey, they are the best ever.

  15. Dave, you are confused. Phish is for children, they were a dead cover band in the beginning. They would be nothing if the “grateful dead” were still around. Grow up and listen to some real music.

  16. lol dave…i’m gettin a little taste of this tour. im at least going to be at Greensboro. that will rock as its the first show on the tour. also i have a sneaking suspicion that they will make a surprise appearance at bonnaroo, which I live down the road from and attend every year.well… keep the faith yall…oneLove

  17. So I got tickets to the concert on the 18th in Worcester. Apparently, the DCU Center is runnign this Dead Threadz promotion, where fans can send in quilt pieces and they will put themn all together to creat a huge quilt for the band. I’m trying to figure out what to put on my quilt square… any ideas?

  18. My name is Carlos, I’ve been a huge fan of the Dead since I was 15. (Now I’m 32) I’m Spanish and despite I’ve been many times in the US, I never manage to attend to a concert of the band. Because of my job I’m living temporarily in Mexico and now I have the chance to attend to a show of the Dead in New Jersey. The Dead are back in town and this time I have my tickets! (
You can’t imagine what this means to me. I’m seriously thinking of proposing to my gf if they play Althea, Brokedown Palace, Looks like rain, crazy fingers, help on the way, or any of my youth anthems.
I left my tie-dyes back at home, but I’ll get one asap.

    Love
