The Friday Mix Tape: It’s Herbie Hancock

We’re welcoming a new weekly contributor into the fold today: Dan Alford’s been an audio guru on Jambands.com since the last millennium, but now he brings his craft to our little pretzel keg. Make him feel at home and download the goods.

Herbie

“Herbie’s electric songbook? A treasure trove of crazy grooves. The first track here features a long and very funky Watermelon Man (originally on Head Hunters) by the one-off ensemble The Concept, featuring George Porter, Ivan Neville, Eric Krasno, Casey Benjamin, ?uestlove and Bill Summers recorded at BB King’s.

The second tune is the rarely covered Doin’ It (originally from Secrets) by AGP, and it seemed a shame to break up the slick jam, especially since the band’s final shows are next week. Track three, Hang Up Your Hang Ups (the opening track from Man Child), offers the most open interpretation here — no surprise it’s by the late, great Fat Mama. Finally, a straight ahead but totally satisfying Chameleon (also Head Hunters) by SCI features guest Darol Anger on fiddle. Enjoy.”

  1. FYI: The original version of Watermelon Man is on Herbie’s 1962 Takin’ Off record, in a much different form than the Head Hunter’s one.

  2. I got a copy at home I believe that I’ll send when I can. The only reason I really know that is because Watermelon Man is one of the first jazz tunes I learned to play on my saxomophone.

  3. welcome aboard Dan – nice to see HT building up its solid contributor list.

keep up the good work fellas!

  4. That’s absolutely true, but the electric version is first on Head Hunters, and it’s pretty distinct as a different tune.
