The Friday Mix Tape: Mountain Jam

This week, to celebrate the Allmans’ annual Beacon run, we have just a single track. This meaty Mountain Jam, clocking in at thirty nine minutes, is the end of a high summer show in Charlotte that has some ups and downs in performance. But this song distills what’s best from a loose attitude into a truly interesting exploration.

Particularly noteworthy are the “Birldand” and “Afro Blue” themes that frame a long jungle trance bout of drums/bass segment. The latter is a crazed interpretation that drives the whole jam home — Derek grabs that lead without a half second’s pause and just runs with it. It’s jazzy, spacey and a whole lot of fun. Enjoy!

  1. Quite possibly the most incredible jam that I’ve been lucky enough to witness in person. Nasty show on the anniversary of Jerry’s death, dedicated a tune to him midset. Statesboro Blues opener. The show that made me a believer in Mr. Derek Trucks as the greatest slide guitarist alive.

I remember after that jam wondering what they’d encore with, possibly Whipping Post? We thought Blue Sky would be fitting (Good ol’ Sunday morning, bells are ringing everywhere, gone to CAROLINA, won’t be long and I’ll be there)…but they kicked it into a version of Layla with such emotion and force that put it on par with when I saw the Slowhand himself perform that tune.

Incredible show, I wear the tourshirt from that year religiously to this day.
