Twitter Trending Topic: Tweezer Reprise

Last night during NBC’s coverage of the Olympics, a montage capturing all 19 medals won by U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps caused an unusual stir. Apparently more than a few Phish fans were watching the London Games and recognized the use of Tweezer Reprise for the video clip’s score. The recognition transferred to Twitter where “Tweezer Reprise” became a worldwide trending topic (Update: Apparently it only trended in the U.S.). NY Daily News writer Colin Jones (@Colin_Jones) tweeted this screengrab showing the trend just a few slots below Phelps.

Here are some of the reactions fans tweeted when Tweeprise was fired up.

Here are a couple of videos of the montage, watch them now before NBC and the IOC have them pulled ASAP.

  1. I dont use twitter, but I definitely posted about this on Facebook instead. I was pretty amazed to hear Phish on NBC olympics coverage.

  2. This is somewhat incorrect. (Don’t get me wrong, I was elated when I saw it last night as well).

Twitter, unbeknownst to users, changed the default settings for a users trending topics to be tailored to a users interests. See this picture: http://twitpic.com/aeagw3

So unless you had changed these settings before last night, you were getting “Tailored Trending Topics.”

We all thought it was trending worldwide because our interests are heavily Phish-related, and our Twitter-sphere consists of users who tweet about Phish, so we all saw “Tweezer Reprise” (most likely tweeted out with a #phish hashtag) in our trending topics.

  3. Phelps and Phish (PT) have long had a relationship. 😉

gotta love that PT broke the story of Phelps rippin tubes. so stupendous.

I assume NBC doesn’t have the rights to air the song in clips online so they had to sub in generic music in its place…
