Umphrey’s McGee: Citizens of Madison

Earlier this month, the Common Council of Madison, WI voted unanimously to make the members of Wilco honorary citizens of their town. One of the reasons given was that Jeff Tweedy et. al had performed in Madison “at least” 13 times. Well, Wilco has nothing on HT faves Umphrey’s McGee who have played 30 gigs in Madison, including 21 shows at Barrymore.

Thanks in part to UM fan Andy Kahn, the mayor of the town recognized the group’s connection to Madison just before Umphrey’s performance at the Orpheum Theatre in Madison last Thursday.  Bassist Ryan Stasik, sound caresser Kevin Browning and keyboardist Joel Cummins picked up a proclamation detailing their new status as honorary citizens of Madison from Mayor Dave Cieslewicz at Town Hall.

With the members of  Wilco and Umphrey’s McGee counted among their citizens, Madison is staking a claim as the coolest town in the country.
