Grateful Dead/Furthur guitarist Bob Weir’s busy week rolls on. We told you about his appearance at a very special Midnight Ramble on Friday, his solo show on Saturday and his coronation as Mayor of moe.ville at moe.down XII on Sunday. Weir’s next stop was Brooklyn, where he helped HT faves Umphrey’s McGee kick off a four-night residency at Brooklyn Bowl.

The Brooklyn Bowl was nearly filled to capacity with rambunctious fans ready for a rock show. Umphrey’s delivered on their end of the bargain by keeping the intensity high through a power-packed first set. Opening with the fitting Bright Lights, Big City, the sextet went on to mix classics Ringo and White Man’s Moccasins with the newer Spires and Hourglass as well as the debut of the Death By Stereo track Domino Theory. Everywhere you turned, Umphreaks were raving about this welcome addition to the band’s repertoire.

During setbreak, the Umphrey’s crew set up an additional microphone and guitar rig as the crowd started to realize something was up. Bob Weir came out immediately and led the Chicago-based group through a lively Not Fade Away that included a scorching solo by guitarist Jake Cinninger. Out of Not Fade, the jam took a left hand turn into the Umphrey’s original Glory. Weir added choppy rhythms to the instrumental as Cinninger delivered one gorgeous, anthemic lick after another. Guitarist Brendan Bayliss had his chance to shine post-Bobby during a raging 40′s Theme solo and the golden oldie Out of Order. The Phil’s Farm second set closer showed the style of “bounceback jam” that were much more frequent for this band during the mid ’00s, before a No Comment > 2nd Self encore sealed the deal on night one. Umphrey’s McGee returns to Brooklyn Bowl tomorrow night, you can also catch them on a free webcast at 2PM ET.
