Vegoose Gets Coachella On Our Asses
We already knew that Rage Against The [Slot] Machine will be co-headlining the third annual Vegoose Festival on the weekend preceding Halloween. Today the festival promoters — Superfly Presents and A.C. Entertainment — confirmed the rest of the initial lineup, and it’s clear there will be a lot less noodling in Las Vegas.
Out with the shakedowns, in with the mosh pits: Daft Punk joins Rage as the Vegoose headliners, and they’ll be joined by Muse, Cypress Hill, Queens of the Stone Age, Public Enemy, the Shins, the Battles and a slew of other bands whose fans consider ‘jam’ a four letter word.

Only Umphrey’s McGee, STS9 and the obligatory Michael Franti appearance will represent the so-called community that built this festival. That’s not to say this isn’t a top-notch lineup and a smart business decision for the promoters, and I can see many of you saying, “Open your eyes, hippie.” Sorry, we’re just still getting used to the idea that festivals are for the hipsters and ragers now. Here’s the full lineup:
Rage Against The Machine
Daft Punk
Iggy & the Stooges (performing the album Fun House)
Muse
The Shins
Cypress Hill
Queens of the Stone Age
Public Enemy
Michael Franti & Spearhead
Umphrey’s McGee
Thievery Corporation
STS9
Ghostface Killah & The Rhythm Roots Allstars
Blonde Redhead
Gogol Bordello
U.N.K.L.E.
Ghostland Observatory
Pharoahe Monch
Battles
As always, there will be late-night shows as well. The House of Blues hosts Thievery Corporation on 10/26, Umphrey’s McGee on 10/27 and STS9 on 10/28. The Joint at the Hard Rock plays host to Franti & Spearhead on the 27th and The Shins on the 28th, with more shows to be announced. So let us know: Are you headed out to Vegoose? Love the new-look lineup? Loyal to the jambands? Fill a brotha in.

“Iggy & the Stooges (performing the album Fun House)”
Stop complaining, you hippie!
I’m one of those hippies with open eyes. I’ve actually seen a number of those artists live before (not just Umphreys). There isn’t much about this festival that makes me think I have to be there. I just hope the opposite holds true and the hipsters open their eyes to Umphreys.
I wrote that post late last night and didn’t quite remember it when I woke up, so let me clarify: As someone who is flat-out mad at jambands, I don’t mind a basic paradigm shift in the lineups of these things. At all. I’m actually all for it.
But I’m just not in love with the direction of the music — the last thing I want at a festival is hard rock and hip-hop and electronika. Tool, Rage, Daft Punk — can’t say these bands are anywhere near my list of must-see festival bands. Gimme some funk or some soul or some rock, but this ain’t it. Well, actually, it’s not enough to get me to Vegas, I should say.
Allright, I’m off to go fuck a rainbow.
What, no Trey? I think this is by far their best lineup yet.
Don’t love it or hate it. It’s just the first round, I’m sure a lot of the usual suspects will get added in the coming weeks. Clearly the whole Bonnaroo line-up leaked early, so maybe they were trying to avoid that happening again.
Wow, really makes me wish I would have went to the previous Vegooses if this is the direction their going to take it.
::exhales loudly:: Looks like I have to be the one AGAIN to ask: “Does Keller Williams know that they’re holding a festival without him?”
Buck up, little hippies, there’s a new thread on Phantasy Tour about Phish re-uniting at the Bonarroo site in September ‘08. Cancel that PetSmart dog food order! Invest your life savings in Taddy Porter!
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
U.N.K.L.E???? So does that mean Thom Yorke will be there>?
I’m fine with the sprinkle of jambands just to keep the hippies happy, but even from an indie kid standpoint, this line-up is not my thing.
I’d love to see Public Enemy - just for the completely classic factor, but there is nothing on the list that would make me spend 2 vacation days and $1500 bucks on.
I’ll watch the webcast
^^
That’s exaaaaactly my sentiment in a nutshell.
This was all a buisiness decision. I’m sure their first pick wouild have been YMSB, Phil and Trey, Keller, Bela, Les Claypool, etc etc - but last year’s event was poorly attended with the jam friendly lineup so they needed to draw a new crowd to keep vegoose sam boyd alive rather than it just being a late night show jam thing
nope, the lineup is not enough to get me to go to vegoose.
granted, unless they had phish, tom waits, tweedy solo, jim james solo and ryan adams, nothing would get me to fly up from south america for it :)
I caught Public Enemy a weeks ago in Amsterdam. A friend convinced me that even if you HATE hiphop this was the one classic act I had to see. They sucked. My friend agreed.
YEEEEAAAAHHHHH BOOOOYYYYYYEEEEEE!!!!
I had a great time last year and I fully expect more bands to be added…im an old deadhead so yes I was drawn to last years for that reason…however…The Roots , J5, The Coup, Praxis and Keller William(whom I had never heard before vegas) were the highlights! you’d be suprised the number of jamband freaks that like music outside that genre. Praxis blew my mind!
Yeah…I gotta say that initially you’d have to put me in the “out” column. I’ll keep paying attention to the additions because I’d really like to see Rage, but as things stand I’ll go see Old Crow at The Ryman that weekend and still be home to go trick-or-treating with my 7 year-old.
As for PE, I saw them on the Nation of Millions tour in ‘88 at Riverfront Coliseum (yeah, I’m that old skool). It was one of the most mind-blowing things a 16 year-old from the suburbs could’ve ever seen, but I can only imagine how awful they would be now.
I was hoping to make it to my first Vegoose this year…. not with this lineup! Not a chance!
Yea i agree this line up is defiatley poo poo.
Bring the jamb bands back it was such a great time last year-open sapce to dance (well a little) and it was not 180 degrees out!
Jam bands seem to lik eto go to really hot months and have outdor shows whats up with athat?
Anywayi will not be attending and hope that next year we get a line up like Ratdog/Phil and Friends/WSP/Gov Mule/Alman brothers/eric claptop!!
heeee that would be awesome.
Buck up. The face of the music industry is changing and that is good. “Nothing gold can stay Pony Boy!”
