Video: Iron & Wine – Long Black Veil
As I mentioned in my recent review of the Newport Folk Festival, one of my standout moments came during Iron & Wine’s set, when Sam Beam and his folk-rock ensemble busted out a sublime cover of Long Black Veil. The song, which was written by Danny Dill and Marijohn Wilkin and originally recorded in 1959 by Lefty Frizzell, has been covered numerous times over the years, but is arguably most famously associated with two acts – The Band, who included it on their debut album Music From Big Pink and country music legend Johnny Cash.
Earlier this year the band headed to the Austin City Limits studio to participate in an all star concert, alongside the likes Lucinda Williams, Willie Nelson and the Carolina Chocolate Drops, to honor the 80th birthday of The Man In Black. The entire show, which will air tonight on PBS, was also released earlier this week on both CD and DVD as We Walk The Line: A Celebration of the Music of Johnny Cash. Let’s check out Iron & Wine’s take on the familiar tune…
