Video: Jimmy Cliff – The Harder They Come

This week’s videos feature bands you should check out at Bonnaroo

While Bob Marley may have become the biggest name in reggae music history, it’s Jimmy Cliff that really deserves the credit for first exposing it to the world to the sounds coming out of Jamaica with his contributions to the soundtrack for 1972’s The Harder They Come, a movie that he also starred in. Cliff, who was recently inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame,  should be on your short list of must-see act this year.

Check out this vintage performance of his signature song…

  1. The video shows clips from the movie “The Harder They Come”, which the song is taken from. It’s really an outstanding movie and worth watching if you enjoy watching “classic” films. It was the first American movie to be shot in Jamaica I think.

I will warn you though that it’s pretty violent and the guerilla-style of the film makes the violence seem more intense, even by today’s standards.

It’s based on a true story, and although the setting would be different today, with the popularity of the “reality show” star, I could imagine a similar story playing out here.

Of course, I’d rather be at the What Stage again…
