It’s not often that I get shocked by a Phish video surfacing on YouTube, but I experienced that emotion yesterday when I saw that Phish video guru tdunski had uploaded a clip of the Vermont quartet covering Prince’s 1999 at Madison Square Garden on December 31, 1998. I’ve been lucky enough to see Phish bust out Terrapin and Sabotage as well as return to the stage after a hiatus and a breakup, but for my money there was no crowd reaction as joyous, loud and lengthy as when the group opened NYE ’98 with 1999. Listen to the crowd roar after each and every line…
Too bad there’s no footage yet of the killer Mike’s Song that followed, but you can check out the furious version of Runaway Jim that led into the traditional New Year’s Eve song, Auld Lang Syne, and Simple.

Look how long Mikes strides are. Trey just casually does the dance moves and Mike is out there breaking a sweat.
holy cow. i never knew what was happening during that tune – only ever heard the tapes, never the story. topless dancers? slick dance moves? mike gettin’ funky on the floor? good grief.
Still today my fav NYE stunt
Well that was just amazing.
stunning. absolutely stunning.
Another exhibit in my lifelong case that this is the greatest rock and roll band.
oh, the memories. unfortunately that night I sitting upstairs in the ‘ranger blue’ seats. when I am that far from the stage, I usually close my eyes to see the music and hear the colors. it is truly wonderful to be able to see a closeup of the stage from that night.
much mahalo to tdunsk & hidden track.
