You Must Hear The Susquehanna Sand

When Phish announced the dates for their first tour in five years I was extremely excited to see that the shows lined up really well with my schedule. My plan was to hit the first five and take the Sunday of Camden off to rest and not be dead tired at work the next day. Well, I enjoyed the first five so much that I just HAD to go last night. To say I made the right decision would be an understatement of gigantic proportion.

Set 1: Chalk Dust Torture, Fee, Wolfman’s Brother, Guyute, My Sweet One, 46 Days, The Lizards, The Wedge, Strange Design, Tube, First Tube

Set 2: Sand, Suzie Greenberg, Limb by Limb, The Horse –> Silent in the Morning, Sugar Shack*, Character Zero, Tweezer

Encore: Joy*, Bouncing Around the Room, Run Like and Antelope, Tweezer Reprise

* – Debut

Last night in the armpit of New Jersey, Camden, the band threw down a Royal Flush in terms of setlist, jamming and tightness of everything with the exception of a few lyric flubs. The second set opened with a MONSTER Sand that had three different jam sections, each one better than the last. Any of those jam segments would’ve qualified the Sand as the best jam of Phish 3.0, so you can imagine how the crowd reacted after 21 minutes of masterful improvisation.

While Great Woods got mixed reviews there doesn’t seem to be anyone who didn’t appreciate last night’s show. Besides the Sand, we were also treated to a blistering Tweezer that remind me of the New Haven Tweezer from 12/2/1995, a Tube – First Tube combo at the end of the first set, a couple of debuts that didn’t suck and the return of Fee. We’ll have more on this show later, but I didn’t want anymore time to pass without recognizing the Susquehanna Sand. Check it out for yourselves…

  1. COuld not agree anymore…it was like the past 5 shows were practice leading up to the big show and this WAS it. The sand was UNREAL!!!! I agree with scotty here for sure, jam of 3.0 without a doubt. I wasnt at Mansfield, but was with someone who was and they agreed. This is without a doubt the show to download…this is why I go see Phish shows.

  2. scotty….great little write up….just to add a couple things. i was really happy to see fee. forget the flubbed lyric section. the ambient jam that came out of it really reminded me of the SOAM>Catapult from Big Cypress. great stuff. not to mention my first Strange Design after god knows how many shows. sightings of brownie, magner, and bayliss added not only to the reunion spectrum but also made me realize the effect this band has had on many other jam bands thriving in the community within this first decade of the 21st century.

  3. Agreed. The Sand was fantastic, as was the whole show! Oh, and yhetti78, it’s Affect, not Effect.
