My Morning Jacket Go Dramatic With “Big Decisions” (SONG REVIEW)

[rating=8.00]

If My Morning Jacket’s new single, “Big Decisions,” is any indication, the band’s forthcoming album will deliver as much emotional drama as visceral impact, grounded in rock and roll’s blues, folk, and country roots.

Floating electronic keyboards quickly give way to the haunting yet familiar sound of Jim James’ wordless vocals, and the track builds upon the mammoth drum sound of Patrick Hallahan through the intertwining of grand electric guitars and long swooping lines of pedal steel, with delicate acoustic piano adding more of the band’s trademark dynamics.

As an introduction to The Waterfall, due May 4th from ATO Records, “Big Decisions” can’t help but recall the magnificent It Still Moves. That may or may not be what the band’s aiming for, but legions of fans are no doubt hungering for after both major and minor diversions for stylistic changes of Z, Evil Urges and the leader’s solo projects.

The track seems to be over before it starts, which is appropriate for a teaser and hopefully it turns out to be just that in terms of the rest of the content on the record (and perhaps even the counterpart album talked about months ago). Thanks to the added depth and presence of Tucker Martine’s production, rediscovering My Morning Jacket in all its glory may take no longer that the duration of this cut.
