Disco Biscuits: Theater of Living Arts, Philadelphia, PA 3/15/10

Caught between a trance-fusion odyssey and a spectacular nonstop jam, the Disco Biscuits showed their endurance on the first of two intimate shows at the Theatre of Living Arts in Philadelphia on Monday night.  On the eve of the release of their much anticipated fifth studio release, Planet Anthem, the Biscuits served friends and loyal fans a three hour plus kickoff celebration to an extensive tour.

Casually taking the stage to an anxious Philly crowd just before 9pm, the Biscuits soared right in to the groove as the bass dropped and the chromatic lights filled the venue.  Sporting nuclear-bright neon bracelets and rings, fans in the front set the tone of the crowd as they zoned off into a fantasy world while the band tore into a heavier instrumental opener with, “Step Inside.”

Known for their insane jam ability, the band got to work quickly as guitarist, Jon Gutwillig, busted out compounding improvised solos like no other.  Any idea that the Biscuits’ sound, via the new record, was headed to more of a pop influence was hushed as the stage was set for a pulsating rhythm to overtake everyone.

Immersed in a mix of heavy synths with a psychedelic jam, fans were taken into another state of mind throughout both sets.  Having seen the Disco Biscuits back in November at the Electric Factory, it was great to see them play at such a small venue to such an excited crowd this past week.

To keep their playing level on the edge, the Biscuits are constantly changing the set list from night to night, so you never know what you’re gonna get at a show.  Also known for inverting songs and completely altering the styles, the band takes creativity to a new level in all angles of the performance.

Leaving everyone in a cyberspace warp and a post-rave mindset, the Disco Biscuits left nothing on the table as the night drew to a close, spanning all spectrums of their musicality.

Plans for a vacation or some time off for the Disco Biscuits in the near future?  Only if by vacation you mean making appearances at Bonnaroo and Wakarusa while also hosting their very own 9th annual Camp Bisco in upstate New York in mid-July.  Back on the road again in support of Planet Anthem, the band’s schedule is as non-stop as their high energized shows.  The question is will you be able to keep up?
