Blitzen Trapper To Reissue Debut Album As Deluxe Edition For Record Store Day

In celebration of its 10th Anniversary, Blitzen Trapper are set to reissue their eponymous 2003 debut album for Record Store Day on Saturday, April 20th. Blitzen Trapper Deluxe Reissue will be released via the band’s own LidKerCow label and will be available on vinyl for the first time as a limited pressing of 1,000. The LP will include a free digital download card featuring the entire album as well as five bonus tracks (four previously unheard) from the original recording sessions.

The record was re-mastered specifically for vinyl by Bruce Barielle with the lacquers cut by Jeff Powell at Ardent Studios in Memphis, TN on the same lathe that was housed at Stax Studios. Pressed on 180g black vinyl, a very limited edition of 200 LPs will be available on Coke-Bottle Clear vinyl and will be mixed in at random with the standard pressing at participating Record Store Day stores only. Looking back on the album, Blitzen Trapper’s frontman Eric Earley stated, "I don’t remember much about making this first record, too long ago maybe. I guess I remember this Mexican dive bar we’d go to after sessions with GW (Gregg Williams) who was engineering the record. We’d drink tequila and play pool and watch Blazers games. Drew took the cover shot down at the coast at some junk shop off the highway. An Indian and a zebra. That says it all." The unheard bonus track "On A Tuesday" can be heard via RollingStone.com now.

The band have also announced a short run of live performances in May with an appearance at the MeadowGrass Music Festival in Colorado Springs, CO on May 24th and a special hometown show in Portland, OR on May 31st.   The band will also support Belle & Sebastian in Austin, TX on July 16th and appear at FloydFest in Floyd, VA on July 26th..

Additionally, the band’s drummer Brian Adrian Koch has adapted and will direct the 1966 cult film Manos: The Hands of Fate for the live stage at the IFCC in Portland, OR. Arguably one of the worst movies ever made, the film was written, directed, produced and starred fertilizer salesman Harold P. Warren and was only available in limited showings at a handful of drive-in theaters. In 1993, the popular television series Mystery Science Theater 3000 brought the film out of obscurity and it soon became a much-loved, and still-revered cult classic. This is Koch’s production company Capital I Productions’ second incarnation of the stage version. It first premiered in 2006 and received rave reviews with the Willamette Week stating "A two-act play every comedy troupe in (Portland) should be forced to see." Koch says "I love that the movie, and this production, make audiences ask themselves ‘are they trying to make horror and failing?’ There is something about that kind of earnest failure that I find hilarious." In a surprising twist only seen in the vast and quirky world of B movies, Jackey Raye Neyman Jones, an Oregonian who played the young girl "Debbie" in the original 1966 film, will join the production of the voice of Debbie in the play. In the film, Debbie’s voice was dubbed over by an older woman – what was heard was a middle-aged woman’s voice mumbling in sync with the young actress’ lips. In Koch’s adaptation, the part of Debbie will be played by a puppet that Neyman Jones will voice from offstage. While he says that the show is for lovers of bad movies, comedy, horror and theatre, music plays a big part as well with onstage musicians providing the production’s live score.   The onstage band will feature Blitzen Trapper’s Eric Earley along with members of the Portland bands The Parson Red Heads and Viva Voce.
